This photo is from a popular body wash marketed for SENSITIVE SKIN. Here, they are blending cheap cleansers, cheap soap derivatives and surfactants to create a 'detergent'. Why use this instead of a wholesome product? Let's take a closer look:
Water (no explanation needed)
Cocamidopropyl Betaine is used as a foam booster and made from coconut or palm kernel oil.
Sodium Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate is a binder, emulsifier and surfactant. It imparts a velvety feel on skin.
Lauric Acid is a saturated fatty acid that contributes hardness, cleansing and big fluffy lather.
Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate is a surfactant/detergent used as a cleansing agent and to impart lather.
Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate is a surfactant/detergent used as a cleansing and lathering agent.
Hydrogenated Soybean Oil (and Soybean Oil) is a cheap oil made from soybeans that has moisturizing properties.
Sodium Chloride is table salt, increases hardness.
Glycerine is the byproduct of soap making that is an excellent humectant. (Why is it added if the soybean oil already has it...? Weird)
Phenoxyethanol is a preservative and stabilizer
Guar is a thickener
Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a derivative of guar and a conditioning agent.
Stearic acid is a thickening agent and contributes to the hardness of a soap bar.
Citric Acid lowers the pH of soap, making it more gentle on the skin.
Fragrance could be anything, it's proprietary, and they don't need to tell us the ingredients.
Sodium isethionate is a detergent used to create lather.
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a toluene (liquid distilled from petroleum)-based ingredient used as a preservative
Tetrasodium EDTA is an anticoagulant used to keep the mixture fluid while processing.
Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate is a preservative
So this product is made CHEAPLY with soybean oil, which alone would make a soft non-lathering soap product. I can tell you that Soybean Oil goes rancid very quickly, that's why it isn't used as a main oil by small soap makers. It also makes a very soft bar. Some soap makers use it in tiny quantities because it has moisturizing properties. Nonetheless, there are waaaaaay better quality oils that will do this.
Notice the foam boosters, binders, emulsifiers, hardening agents and preservatives? Why add them when soap is naturally all of those things by itself? My guess is that the soybean oil is so cheap and awful that lathering agents, thickeners and preservatives have to be added before the body wash becomes even remotely sellable or usable.
Remember---- the rule of mass production is to make the MOST quantity with the CHEAPEST ingredients and charge the HIGHEST price possible to the consumer!
And that is EXACTLY what is happening with this product on this page.
SOAP LAB does NONE of this. Simple and quality ingredients. That's it. Our promise to you.
